My Favorite Things: A History of “Perfect” Acquisitions

Last week, we discussed how taste shifts consumption from shopping (or looking for something to buy) to obtainment (or a knowledgeable search for a specific item). While typically understood as a tool of social hierarchy, taste, when turned inward, provides a certain clarity to consumptive choice; defining the criteria to what one values and appreciates. In practice, this method of acquisition requires considerable time and patience; however, it is incredibly gratifying. It is as if you have discovered the perfect item – not for its expense or exclusivity, but its ability to speak to who you are. I have gathered some of my all-time favorite acquisitions and included inspiration, thought-process, and sourcing in the hope that it provides guidance and inspiration for those beginning to see consumption differently… (Or for those who want a few ideas on how to spend the gift cards they expect to receive later this week!)
