In September, A Sunday Journal reader Hariena Haile asked for my thoughts on The Nanny, particularly how the show illustrates class divides through clothing. Unbeknownst to Haile, I consider myself uniquely qualified to tackle this topic (I had a Canyon Group robe in the 1990s courtesy of Ms. Fran Fine). In short:
The Nanny exemplifies how fashion acts as a tool of distinction almost exclusively by the middle class, as well as how habitus* informs taste. Without requiring an encyclopedic knowledge of Moschino, Chanel, or Versace, viewers understand Fran stands out through observability. Her difference in class and culture are communicated through her penchant for bold colors and patterns, not poor fit and fabrication.
